Coolmine residential rehabilitation services
People in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction have to face huge problems as they try to rebuild their lives. Dealing with cravings and staying clean and sober is an uphill struggle every day. When you add all the normal stresses – money, family relationships, and the problems of daily life – the pressures can seem unbearable. Often what someone in this situation needs more than anything, is time in a place that offers a safe and supportive environment, where they can take control of their own recovery. Coolmine residential projects are designed to do just that.
Clients benefit from the close support of professional counsellors, individualised care plans, and a therapeutic programme based on self-help in a group setting.
Clients in our residential projects have a structured living routine that consists of daily groups and workshops. Group work covers health promotion, relapse prevention, social skills, life spheres, self and peer evaluation, weekend planning, art classes, computing courses, horticultural projects and yoga.
In parallel with the group programme, clients work on their personal goals with a dedicated key worker who is assigned to them when they join the programme. Together, they develop and follow through a care plan, based on an holistic assessment and tailored to the individual needs of the client. Care plans are reviewed regularly to ensure that goals are met along the way and that the client is supported appropriately at all times.
Coolmine places a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer support. All clients are working towards the same end: to live life without the pressures and issues associated with substance misuse. At every step, assessment of each client’s progress involves evaluation by their peers.
In the spirit of community living, clients take responsibility for the house and grounds, with catering, gardening, maintenance and laundry duties all being part of a daily roster. Each person on the programme has a responsibility to be aware of the physical and emotional well-being of their peers and for general practicalities regarding the upkeep of the site.
Coolmine adopts the approach that, wherever possible, family members and/or significant others nominated by the client should play a key role in the recovery process, and in turn be supported by Coolmine staff. Families are involved in care plans through regular informal contacts and periodic structured three-way meetings with the client and their key worker.
Care plans also involve a range of outside agencies and services including social workers, probation officers and families with whom some clients’ children may be temporarily residing. These interactions take the form of three-way meetings and telephone updates in consultation with the client.
The ultimate goal of all Coolmine programmes is to enable clients to start living free from dependence on drugs and/or alcohol, when they can begin to enjoy a productive life in a safe and sustainable way.
At the end of a six month residential programme most clients opt to progress to the Coolmine Integration Service. This programme continues supporting clients through groups and key work, while they reside in community-based housing and begin their reintegration into the wider community.
